The cover of this February 28, 1977 Sports Illustrated issue features Cale Yarborough on the cover. This issue and many others can be found in our shop PFTP Antiques

Yarborough Wins the Daytona 500

At the mid point of the Daytona 500 Cale Yarborough, Donnie Allison, David Pearson, A. J. Foyt, Darrell Waltrip, Benny Parsons and Buddy Baker were leading the pack. However, not long after, many of the pack started to drop off. Yarborough kept running strong and became the only man other than Petty to have won the Daytona 500 more than once at the time.

Yarborough last won the 500 nine years before. He went on to win two more times in 1983 and 1984 for a total of four Daytona 500 wins.

1977 was yarborough’s best year. He had nine wins in total, finished every race and scored 5000 points in a 30-race schedule.  He won a second straight championship by 386 points over Richard Petty.

UCLA Bruins Get Swept

Game action below between UCLA and Oregon. Despite UCLA being a dominant team, Oregon seemed to have their number during the 1976-1977 season. In their most recent matchup Oregon again took the game 64-55 to sweep them for the season.

UCLA had a season record of 23-4, but they were taken down by the unranked Idaho State team in the West Regional semifinals.

A Running Inspiration

Frank Shorter was one of the American runners that drove the rising interest of running in the 1970’s. He won the gold medal in the marathon at the 1972 Olympics and a silver at the 1976 Olympics.

Shorter was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 1984, the USA National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1989, and the National Distance Running Hall of Fame in 1998

I haven’t owned either of these cars, but I have always preferred the look of the Beetle. It seems like a pretty hard to beat little car.

I was recently reading that the VW CEO has stated that they will not produce an EV Beetle. However, it looks like others are already ahead of the game with EV conversions for classic Beetles.

We look forward to hearing from our readers. Please leave a comment and let us know what you think.
